APTP Seeks Box Office Coordinator (Part-Time)

Albany Park Theater Project (APTP) seeks to hire a Box Office Coordinator to support the premiere of LEARNING CURVE, an immersive theater performance created collaboratively by APTP, one of the country’s preeminent youth theater ensembles and recipient of a prestigious MacArthur Award, and Third Rail Projects, a Bessie Award-winning dance-theater company at the forefront of immersive and site-specific theater. LEARNING CURVE is a theatrical journey into public education that places audiences in a Chicago public high school and in the shoes of its students. After two years in development, LEARNING CURVE premiered in July to rave reviews, including four stars from the Chicago Tribune. The production is sold out through November 20.

Position Summary

The Box Office Coordinator will be in charge of advance sales, day of sales, and member/VIP patron services for Learning Curve. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Manage advance ticketing through OvationTix (online & call center), which includes entering and updating event details, overseeing ticket availability, holding and releasing house tickets, entering new performances

• Provide regular reports on ticket sales and availability to APTP staff and board members

• As box office attendant at performances, blend into the immersive world of the performance by assuming the role of school staff and wearing a costume to check audience members in by taking their photo, collecting information, and producing the school ID they will wear throughout the performance

• Troubleshoot patron problems such as late arrivals, patrons who arrive on the wrong date or with too many people in their party, etc. – and do so as much as possible without breaking the immersive world of the play that the audience enters

• Manage exchanges, cancellations and wait lists to maximize attendance

• Process transactions for pre-show walk-up purchases and purchases off the wait list

• Staff swag table post performance

The experiential nature of Learning Curve poses some unique variations from the norm for the Box Office Coordinator. The show is strictly limited to 40 audience members at each performance. Given the limited availability and high demand, managing VIP requests will require particular finesse. The Box Office Coordinator will dedicate special attention to responding to cancellations and exchanges by selling to the wait list, often less than 24 hours before show time.

Important skills required include excellent customer service, exceptional attention to detail, strong verbal communication skills by phone and in person, the ability to interface with audience with comfort and confidence, and staying focused in the fast-paced and sometimes stressful pre-show environment.

The Box Office Coordinator will be paid $13/hour.
