This October, we hosted APTP Open House, a week of art-making activities for the Albany Park neighborhood! People learned how to make rope, express your beliefs with a protest banner, or mix some music. The week ended with a neighborhood art party and gathering with food, music, and more!

Check out our schedule for the week:

Tuesday, Oct. 24th
6-8pm
Mural Painting with Ellie Terrell

If you attended an APTP performance over at The Laura Wiley Theater at Eugene Field Park, you know our home is nestled near the north branch of the Chicago River.  If you live in Albany Park you know that area tends to have a “100 Year Flood” at least every other year (in fact we did a show about it). To combat the flooding, the city of Chicago placed temporary flood barricades along the river. APTP will claim some of those flood barricades with our own murals.

Come and join APTP’s own Props and Objects Specialist and all around brilliant artist, Ellie Terrell, as we paint and celebrate Albany Park’s people, history, power, and resilience! The facts: wear clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting paint on and ages 10 to 100 welcome!

Wednesday, Oct. 25th
5-7pm
Ropemaking with Yesenia Bello

Learn this useful skill in a group setting by using fibers, threads, found materials, and the body. Work as a group to create rope and set intentions for a more fortified ‘you’.

Thursday, Oct. 26th
5-7:30pm
Protest Banners with Aram Han Sifuentes

“The Protest Banner Lending Library is a space for people to gain skills to learn to make their own banners, a communal sewing space where we support each other’s voices, and a place where people can check out handmade banners to use in protests.” Come make these protest banners at the APTP space to learn new skills and speak your mind!

Friday, Oct. 27th
5-8pm
Body Percussion and Dance Party with Stephanie Paul and Mikhail Fiksel

Learn how to use your body as a powerful tool for sound, beat, and rhythm by attending this workshop facilitated by dancer, choreographer, musician, body percussionist, and APTP resident director/artist Stephanie Paul. Following the workshop, stay for a freestyle dance session with APTP resident artist and sound designer Misha Fiksel as our DJ!

Saturday, Oct. 28th
11am-4pm
Open House Fair with the Mobilize Creative Collaborative and more!

APTP Open House will culminate in a community fair held at Eugene Field Park! Stop by for some barbecue food, some tamales, warm drinks and stay for the mural painting, toy making, music making, and more! This day will be a chance for neighbors to learn more about the art that APTP does as well as create some art with APTP community members and friends.
